Sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due and Midnight Mayhem II was one of those times. For an event that was rescheduled multiple times due to bad weather and even being rescheduled again just one day before the event was supposed to go ahead, the turnout was still incredible. Some of Sydney’s quickest and fastest cars came out to put on a show and they did not disappoint, with world records and personal bests being broken all throughout the day.
Midnight Mayhem wasn’t just a drag racing event. With Cultura Automotive Lifestyle hosting the show and shine section of the event, it attracted some seriously well built cars and below you’ll see some of my personal favourites. I am quite biased towards Evo’s so seeing ABSURD from Evolution Racing Spares up close and personal was quite a treat. In saying that, you cannot ignore the quality of the PAC Performance built Mazda RX3’s. Absolute perfection.
The show and shine wasn’t the only place to find some special cars, with Croydon Racing Developments pits being directly opposite I had to take an up close look at the legendary JUN II Nissan Skyline GTR. The pit areas were also littered with supercars making for a really cool contrast amongst all the purpose built race cars. But don’t get it twisted, some of them are still capable of keeping up with the fastest cars down the strip.
Despite rescheduling the event multiple times, the weather still managed to take a turn for the worst and the heavens opened up. It only rained for a short amount of time and thankfully the team at Sydney Dragway were able to get the track dry and ready for more racing pretty quickly. The down time gave teams an opportunity to button up any issues they may have had with their vehicles and I saw plenty of teams just taking the time to fire up the barbecue and feed friends and family. For the most part everyone was still in good spirits and I feel that summed up the event perfectly. Everyone was just there for a good time with good people and the racing was the cherry on top.
Once the announcement was made that racing will go ahead again, it was full speed ahead! Track conditions seemed great as I don’t think I’ve seen so many 7 and 8 second passes in a day in a very long time! Drivers were definitely not holding back.
Overall Midnight Mayhem II was an amazing event and what better way to top it off than with an ice cream? I will be back for Midnight Mayhem III, you can count on that.
