Now if you thought last years event was good, you were definitely in for a treat this year as GTR Festival 2019 did not disappoint! With what seemed like a much more organised event this time around, it was easy to navigate through the festival and see exactly what you were looking for, whether it was a specific workshops car, a trade stand, or just the racing, there was no confusion as to what was going on. I spent most of the day actually taking it all in before whipping out the camera and taking photos, which I think helped in the experience overall as I wasn’t just stuck behind the lens the entire time.
This year we were lucky enough to witness Australia’s first R35 GTR into the 7 second bracket down the quarter mile from Precision Racing, along with yet another 6.9 second pass from JUN II and the team at CRD. As always, Maatouks Racing were out in force along with B2R Motorsport, Precision Racing and many more that are well known among the GTR scene. The GTR’s weren’t the only ones putting on a show however, with Gas Racing’s “KING2J” Supra getting out there and laying down a 7.0 @ 207mph and we also saw Team Karam’s evo “KNG 4G” out for some testing after a fresh build which managed to run 148mph, so that will be one car to keep an eye out for in the future!
Last years event saw a genuine Z-Tune R34 GTR come out for the show. This year that car returned and was joined by another genuine Z-Tune this time all the way from V-Spec Performance in Melbourne and they brought along a few other gems as well, such as a Mine’s edition R34 and a genuine 400R R33 GTR which sports a RB-X GT2 engine and if that isn’t the most badass engine code you’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is.
GTR Festival goes to show how versatile the GTR platform really is. You can use them to get the groceries, as a weekend warrior, an all out drag car and even record breaking time attack cars or anything in between. If you can think of something a GTR could do, someone will build it and they’ll have it on display at the festival. If you didn’t see it this year, there’s a good chance you will next time!
And hey, who said GTR Festival had to be all about GTR’s anyway? There’s always some other amazing cars to see and vendors showing off entire ranges, not just GTR specific parts, so even if you aren’t into GTR’s it’s still great to go and have a look at what else there is on display!
